ChatGPT Ads for Jewelers: What Launched, What It Costs, and How to Advertise on ChatGPT
Share
A woman starts shopping for an engagement ring. She doesn't open Google. She opens ChatGPT and asks where to buy a custom setting under $8,000 without getting talked into something she doesn't want.
She has an answer in about four seconds. A short list of names, and no page two.
Look at whose names appear on those lists. Heritage brands. Mall chains. Online retailers with enormous content operations behind them. The independent store four miles away, the one with a bench jeweler who could make the ring she described, usually isn't mentioned at all.
Until recently, you couldn't join that conversation by spending money. That has changed, and it's the first development in AI advertising for jewelry retailers that a single-location store can act on.
What launched, and when
OpenAI began testing ads inside ChatGPT on February 9, 2026, in the United States. The self-serve Ads Manager opened to US advertisers on May 5, 2026, at ads.openai.com, and international expansion began that August. Ads Manager now runs in nine countries: the US, Canada, Mexico, Brazil, the UK, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, and Korea, with availability that "may continue to evolve as testing expands."
It took six months to go from a closed pilot to an open platform. Channels in jewelry marketing rarely arrive that fast.
What the ad actually looks like
A sponsored unit below the response, carrying the advertiser name, favicon, title, copy, landing page, and image asset. No carousel, no video. Ads "are clearly labeled as sponsored and visually separated," and a user "may see one or more ad units below a ChatGPT response."

Write the copy very short and front-load the value. Someone reading a ChatGPT answer is mid-thought, and the card has about a second and a half to land.
One boundary is worth stating plainly. Buying a placement does not change how ChatGPT talks about your store on its own: "Ads do not influence ChatGPT's answers. Ads run on separate systems from our chat model, and advertisers have no ability to shape, rank, or alter ChatGPT's responses. "Getting mentioned organically is a different problem with a different solution.
Who actually sees these ads
This is the part most coverage skips. Ads "may appear for users on the Free and Go plans. Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Edu accounts will not have ads." OpenAI also doesn't show ads "to accounts identified as belonging to users under 18," and none appear in the ChatGPT Atlas browser.
That limits your reach. A meaningful slice of ChatGPT's most engaged users pay for the product, and they're outside this channel entirely. What you're buying is the free tier, still the overwhelming majority of the user base, and it's full of people researching a purchase they've never made before.
There are no keywords
If you've run Google Search or Facebook ads for jewelry, this is the adjustment that takes the longest. Traditional jewelry store advertising starts with a keyword list. None of that exists here.
Ad groups use context hints instead: plain-language information about your product beyond what your ad and landing page already say. OpenAI's example contrasts "running shoes" with "cushioned everyday running shoes for beginners training for their first 5K. " The jewelry equivalent isn't "engagement rings"; it's closer to custom engagement ring design for couples using a family stone.
Read the fine print, though. OpenAI states that context hints "are not exact-match controls, audience targeting rules, or instructions to show your ad only for specific conversations." You're giving the system better information about what you sell, not fencing off who sees you.
Your landing page matters here too. OpenAI lists "landing page experience" and "relevance to the user" among the factors behind performance, so existing jewelry SEO work and thoughtful jewelry website design compound in a way they don't in most paid channels.
Yes, a local store can target its own area
This is what turns ChatGPT Ads from interesting into usable. The platform supports "campaign-level country targeting and, in the United States, supported state, designated market area (DMA), and ZIP code targeting."
A jeweler in Naperville can run against conversations in the western Chicago suburbs and nowhere else, rather than paying for a shopper in Phoenix reading the same answer. For digital marketing for jewelry stores, that's the difference between a channel you read about and one you can budget for. Target the trade area you actually draw from, not the whole metro.

Why this matters for jewelry retailers specifically
Jewelry has always been a research-heavy purchase, and that research used to spread across a dozen tabs, and your jewelry's digital marketing had a dozen chances to appear in it. AI compresses it into one answer. Fewer tabs means fewer openings, which is bad news if you're invisible and better news if you're not, because a sponsored card beside a four-sentence answer isn't fighting nine organic results for attention.
Notice, too, what the client’s asking. It's usually something she'd be embarrassed to ask a salesperson. What's a fair price? Whether lab-grown is a mistake. Whether she's being overcharged. That's the pre-decision moment where an independent store's real advantage matters most, and marketing for jewelers has never had a paid placement sitting right there.
What it costs, and what you can measure
Campaigns run on three models: CPM for reach, CPC for traffic, and oCPC, a conversion-optimized cost per click, for downstream actions. Daily budgets are averages, not caps: OpenAI defines one as "the average amount you want your campaign to spend per day over a seven-day period," and delivery can hit twice that on a given day. Budget with the weekly number in mind.
Reporting covers impressions, clicks, spend, CTR, average CPC, average CPM, and conversions, with a JavaScript pixel and a Conversions API for what happens after the click. Expect delivery within 24 hours of launch and 24 to 48 hours for conversions to appear.
No vertical performance data has been published for jewelry or any other category, so nobody can tell you what a click is worth yet. Set a budget you're comfortable treating as tuition, and judge it the way you'd judge a new email marketing list for jewelry in its first month: does the traffic behave like qualified traffic?
Getting set up before your competitors do
Setup runs five steps: create the account, verify through Persona, complete your account information, set up billing, and invite team members. One line there matters more than it looks: "Each business should have only one account owner create the advertiser account." Have the store own it. There is no manager account structure yet, no equivalent to a Google Ads MCC, and no clean way to hand ownership over later. Once it exists, add your jewelry marketing agency under Settings > Users > Invite, then start with a small test budget and an honest trade-area map.
Frequently asked questions
Who sees ChatGPT ads? Users on Free and Go. Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Edu accounts don't see ads, and neither do accounts identified as under 18.
What do they cost? You pick CPM, CPC, or conversion-optimized CPC and set a daily budget, which OpenAI treats as a seven-day average. No jewelry benchmarks published.
Can a local store target its area? Yes, at the state, DMA, and ZIP code levels in the US.
Do I need my ad account? Yes. One owner per business creates and verifies it, then invites others under Settings > Users.
